How to Make Sure You Aren't Buying a Lemon of a Used Car

The last thing that anyone needs is a car that needs to be in and out of the shop regularly for mechanical problems that could cost a lot of money to fix. Regardless of the cost, car problems add up quickly. The best thing to do is make sure that you can depend on the vehicle that you are buying before you buy it. Here are a few tips to follow in order to ensure that you are not buying a lemon.
1. Always do your research!
Know what you are buying, look at your options, and choose the car that is right for you. You should know every detail about your prospective purchase before you buy. Less can go wrong if you know what you are buying. Check out the particular brand that you are interested in, check consumer reports and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for complaints and comments on particular brands.

2. Ask Questions!
There are many questions that you should ask before buying a used car. Make a list of your questions before you go to buy so that you do not forget any important details. It is easy to get nervous or intimidated when shopping for a car. Never rush into making a decision. Make sure that you know everything there is to know about the car you are about to buy. That way you are less likely to get ripped off if you know the detail.
3. Always, always, always get a vehicle history report!!
This is crucial; you need to know if your potential ride was ever in an accident, flood, etc. Not only can you find this online, you should also ask the dealership if anything happened in the cars history that could void the warranty, get his response in writing.
4. Never buy a car on impulse!
The purchase of a vehicle is an important one and should not be entered into lightly. Do not buy a car on impulse, I cannot stress this enough. Know what you are buying through and through.
5. Buy from a dealership.
It is easier to buy a lemon from a private seller than it is from a dealership. Most dealerships check used cars thoroughly, and offer a warranty. You will not get these things from a private party.
I my opinion, I would never even think of buying a car from a private owner.
